    Web Site Launch

It is indeed a privilege and an honor to address all visitors to this site which we are happily launching for our Club.

Hamrun Liberty Sports Club was established as a football team for young boys in 1963. Our early days were rather primitive with some of us forking out money from their money boxes to purchase our first kit and register with the IASC. Little could I imagine that nearly fifty years later I would be participating in the launching of a web site as President of this Club. Of course, Computers and Web Sites were not in the equation in those days, but we still have in our possession a copy of the type written letter we had sent to the IASC to apply for a place in this football organization. Nearly fifty years later we are still soldering on there after winning both the League Championship and Knock Out Competitions for innumerable times. Incidentally we hold a record of winning the Knock Out competition for 10 CONSECUTIVE years. It is our intention to list on this web site several records our Club holds as we go along.

This is definitely not the only feather in our cap. We can really be proud and happy of a very chequered history. We enjoyed a wonderful time as a nursery to our home team Hamrun Spartans wining several honors for our club as well as having many of our club products featuring prominently in the golden days of the Spartans in the Eighties. The first ever Maltese professional player Michael Degiorgio is a product of our Club.

We also enjoyed a lovely spell in Basketball winning all honors in the Basketball Scene. Even here we were the ones to launch Samuel Deguara in the basketball sphere as the only Maltese professional basketball player plying his trade in Italy. Another Maltese who did his country proud is the World Billiards Champion Joe Grech. Joe is more famous for honors he won in the Snooker field. But it was our Club who convinced, sponsored and pushed Joe Grech to become World Champion in the Billiards Competition. Our Club is also well established in the local Bocci field. In this traditionally Maltese game, our trophy room is graced with several honors conquered. Also here we won all honors one could hope for.

But our Club has also a social dimension in the our home town of Hamrun, representing its periphery of Blata l-Bajda. For quite a few years now we have shouldered responsibility of street decorations in our area both at Christmas time and for the annual Festa of San Gaetano which is very dear for us Hamrun folks. An endless list of famous personalities have visited our Club on different occasions. The legendary Stanley Matthews and the Golden Boy of Italian football Gianni Rivera among others immediately spring to mind. It is our intention to serialize these events in this web site as well as keep all visitors informed of all that is happening at our Club. May I take this opportunity to thank heartily my colleagues who are making the dream of this splendid innovative idea a reality.

    George D’Amato

    President

  • About Us
    3 August 2011

Hamrun Liberty SC was founded back in 1963 under the name of ‘White Rock Rangers’, in the so called “Archbishop’s Building’ in Blata L-Bajda. A year later the administration of the club moved to ‘Lord Plumer Bar’ in High Street Hamrun, owned by the Azzopardi Family. A member of the Azzopardi family, Charles, is still a member of the committee as treasurer of the club to date.

In 1966 the administration moved once more to the then ‘Radio City Bar’ and also changed the club’s name to ‘Hamrun Liberty Sports Club’. The club was presided at the time by the late Louis Catania, who is also remembered as the founder member of the Malta Amateur Football Association (M.AF.A.). From this year on the club established itself as a very strong team in the Inter Amateur Soccer Competition (I.A.S.C.), by winning the Championship that same year,  with help of some very good talents of Maltese football at the time like Robert Gatt who went on to become Malta’s international Goalkeeper later on during his career.

1968 saw the club make a milestone achievement by moving for the first time in its own premises, in 20, Camelia Street Hamrun, where  the club remained for several years. The premises are still owned by the club and are currently used as the meeting place of the ‘Festa Section’, a branch of the club founded in 2005, which is responsible for the funding and upkeep of a number of street decorations used solely in the feast of ‘San Gejtanu’ in the beginning of August.

In 1973 the club expanded its facilities by acquiring the premises next door, 21, Camelia Street Hamrun. This expansion served the club in a number of ways, mainly because the area increased considerably and allowed the committee to set-up an official committee room, a Billiard room and also shower facilities. The new lay-out was inaugurated on the 8th August 1973 by the then acting Prime Minister, the late Anton Buttigieg, and blessed by his Grace The Archbishop of Malta Mons. Michael Gonzi. It was a rare occurrence at the time for the Archbishop to attend such functions, however He accepted since the founders of the club at the time had made use of His premises to hold the first meetings in Blata L-Bajda.

This was a very special period for the club since it picked up momentum and established itself as one of the main Sports Clubs in Hamrun, which saw the long Presidency of the late Joseph Ciscaldi, who served as President of the club for over 16years. Meanwhile Dun Anton Portelli, also joined the committee of Hamrun Liberty in 1974, and was the pioneer to the introduction of a football nursery in Hamrun. This project saw numerous youngsters train and play football at the Mile End grounds, in the premise that one day they will make part of the Hamrun Spartans FC senior squad. The concept of youth nurseries was still new on the island and Hamrun Liberty can boast that is was one of the first clubs in Malta to emulate the educational Sports Centre which had just been founded by Fr. Hilary Tagliaferro.

Consequently Hamrun Liberty played a vital role in the numerous honours won by the Spartans in the early eighties, since a considerable number of players have become the starlets of the best team on the island at the time Hamrun Spartans. Coached with great dedication by the late Salvu Mifsud and Ronnie Attard in the later years, some players managed to successfully nurture their talents and make it to the top spots in Maltese football, many of them reaching international level by playing with Malta’s first team. Players like;  Michael Degiorgio, Marco Grech, Leo Refalo, Gejtu Refalo, Stefan Sultana, Konrad Sultana and David Cammileri are some of the best players who played with the Hamrun Liberty nursery and eventually moved on to play with the Spartans.

From the late 70's Hamrun Liberty ventured also into another sport, Basketball, where the club managed to win all major honours. More detailed articles on Liberty's involvment in Basketball and Bocci to follow in this website.
